Senator Osita B. Izunaso, OFR, Ph.D, joined the nation in honouring the strength, resilience and contributions of women in Nigeria as the country marked the 2026 International Women’s Day with special celebrations and advocacy for expanded opportunities.
In an event organized by the Kpakpando Foundation in collaboration with Juno Hotel in Abuja, Izunaso said women remain essential to the social, economic and cultural development of communities and the nation at large. He described women as builders, managers, caregivers and leaders whose roles deserve recognition and deliberate support.
Speaking to journalists and attendees, Izunaso noted that women’s contributions often go unrecognized despite their central roles in family life, commerce, public service and grassroots mobilisation. He urged stakeholders in government, business and civil society to create more opportunities that will empower women economically and promote their participation in decision-making processes across all levels of society.
“We celebrate the invaluable impact of women in our homes, workplaces and communities. Their resilience, creativity and leadership continue to shape the future of our nation,” Izunaso said, emphasizing the need to strengthen support for policies that expand access to education, healthcare and economic resources for girls and women.
The senator added that meaningful progress in gender equity requires deliberate action from all sectors, not just symbolic recognition on commemorative days. He called on organisations, development partners and policymakers to invest in programmes that equip women with skills, capital and platforms to excel in competitive environments.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to uplifting every woman and girl so they can fulfil their potential and contribute fully to national development,” Izunaso added.
International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8, recognises the achievements of women while drawing attention to ongoing challenges in gender equality, justice and inclusion. The 2026 celebration in Nigeria brought together leaders, community groups and organisations to honour women’s contributions and advocate for actionable policies that promote their rights and opportunities.
