The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has celebrated Nigerian women as the world marks the 2026 International Women’s Day, urging stakeholders across the digital ecosystem to intensify efforts toward bridging the gender gap in access to information and communication technologies.
The Commission stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, private sector operators, civil society organisations and development partners to ensure that women are not left behind in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
In its message commemorating the global event, the telecoms regulatory body highlighted the importance of digital inclusion in empowering women and promoting equitable participation in economic and social development. It noted that access to digital tools and connectivity has become a critical factor in expanding opportunities for women in education, entrepreneurship, governance and innovation.
The Commission observed that despite progress recorded in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, many women, particularly in underserved and rural communities, still face barriers to digital access, skills acquisition and meaningful participation in the technology space. It called for sustained policies and programmes that would encourage more women and girls to embrace digital technology and benefit from emerging opportunities in the sector.
According to the NCC, closing the digital gender gap will not only advance gender equality but will also strengthen national development by enabling women to fully contribute their skills and creativity to the digital economy. The Commission encouraged continued advocacy and investments aimed at promoting digital literacy, access to affordable connectivity and inclusive technology-driven initiatives across the country.
The telecoms regulator also commended the resilience, achievements and contributions of Nigerian women across different sectors, reaffirming its commitment to initiatives that promote women’s empowerment through information and communication technologies.
International Women’s Day is observed globally every year on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women while drawing attention to the need for gender equality and inclusive opportunities across all sectors of society. �
