Nigeria and Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger diplomatic relations and expanded cooperation in security, trade, and economic development following a high-level meeting in Abuja.
The Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, hosted Somalia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Osman Mohamed, at the ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday May 5th, 2026, where both countries pledged to intensify collaboration on shared regional challenges and development priorities.
During the discussions, Ambassador Ahmed emphasized Nigeria’s support for Somalia’s efforts to strengthen national institutions, improve stability, and protect its sovereignty. He noted that closer engagement between both nations would further reinforce the longstanding relationship between Abuja and Mogadishu.
The Somali envoy highlighted the growing need for stronger intelligence sharing and coordinated security strategies to combat terrorism, piracy, and transnational crime across the region. He also called for deeper cooperation in institutional development, technology exchange, and investment opportunities.
Ambassador Mohamed briefed Nigerian officials on the current security situation in Somalia and commended Nigeria and the international community for their continued backing in safeguarding Somalia’s territorial integrity.
In response, Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to share its experience in tackling insurgency and terrorism through both military and non-military approaches. He identified maritime security, anti-piracy operations, and human capacity development as key areas where both countries could collaborate for regional peace and economic stability.
Beyond security matters, both sides explored opportunities for stronger economic ties in agriculture, mining, digital innovation, and fintech sectors. Officials said enhanced cooperation in these industries could stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities, especially for young people.
The talks also addressed the importance of promoting safe and regulated migration within Africa as part of wider efforts to curb irregular migration across the continent.
Ambassador Ahmed also assured the Somali envoy of Nigeria’s continued support in carrying out his diplomatic responsibilities.
