The Nigerian Army has issued a disclaimer distancing itself from one Haruna Garba Gololo, popularly known as Garus Gololo, following a media report that described him as a retired Nigerian Army General.
The clarification followed a publication by saharareporters.com titled “Retired Nigerian Army General Arrested in Abuja After Criticising Senate President Akpabio Over 2027 Comments,” which made reference to the individual in question.
In its reaction, the Nigerian Army stated that it observed the publication with concern and categorically affirmed that Haruna Garba Gololo is neither a serving nor retired officer of the Nigerian Army, adding that he has never served in the institution in any capacity whatsoever.
The Army described the portrayal as false, misleading and capable of creating wrong impressions in the minds of the public, particularly on matters involving the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
It stressed the importance of due diligence in media reporting, urging journalists and media organisations to uphold accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism, especially when reporting issues relating to security agencies and national institutions.
The statement further called on the public to disregard the misleading attribution, while urging relevant media platforms to correct the misrepresentation in order to prevent the spread of misinformation capable of undermining public trust and institutional integrity.
Reaffirming its mandate, the Nigerian Army restated its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
