Few political contests in Anambra Central draw the kind of attention the senatorial seat attracts. The senatorial district’s election cycle brings conversations in communities, party meetings, markets and town unions about who carries the experience, reach and consistency to represent the zone at the National Assembly.
Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is one of the frontline candidates in that conversation.
He has held public office before. He served in the House of Representatives, representing Njikoka, Dunukofia and Anaocha Federal Constituency. That period placed him inside federal legislative work, committee assignments, constituency representation and engagement around budget and policy matters. It also brought him into constant interaction between national decision-making and local expectations from his constituency.
That experience remains central to how his political background is viewed by many within the district who consider prior legislative service an important factor in choosing representation.
Hon Nwankwo holds a degree in Accounting from the University of Port Harcourt. The training is often mentioned in discussions around public finance, budgeting and oversight responsibilities, particularly where questions around expenditure tracking and accountability in governance come up.
He also attended governance and leadership programmes that exposed him to administrative systems, institutional processes and the way decisions move from planning to implementation within public institutions.
His philanthropic and political presence in Anambra Central and beyond has also been sustained through the Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo Foundation. Through the platform, assistance has gone into education support, small trader empowerment and medical outreach across communities. Students have received support to remain in school, traders have benefited from empowerment efforts, and medical outreach programmes have reached families in different locations across the district. Many of these interventions are carried out quietly, with beneficiaries often encountering them directly in their communities.
In several places, those interventions remain part of how residents describe his name, especially among those who have benefited from support or witnessed the outreach programmes firsthand. One often hear Onye Ndozi, it is an uncommon name that transcend Anambra Central.
Politics in Anambra Central and Anambra as a whole is shaped heavily by direct contact. Traditional rulers, town union executives, market leaders, youth groups, women organisations and ward structures all influence political direction. Candidates are often measured by how consistently they remain present in these spaces and how well they maintain contact with local concerns over time.
Nwankwo’s interactions across these structures have remained steady. He has been present in meetings with community leaders, engagements with party members, visits to markets, social gatherings and discussions with youth and traditional institutions. Those interactions have taken place over time and not only during election periods.
Party structures across the entire district reflect that same pattern of engagement built through repeated contact at grassroots level.
The recently concluded party primaries produced a clear result. He polled 41,586 votes out of 42,896 votes cast, representing 96.95 percent of the total votes. The margin stood out in the contest and immediately became a reference point in internal party discussions across the district. It reflected a wide spread of support across the local government areas involved in the exercise.
For many within the party structure, the outcome was not seen in isolation but as the result of years of sustained engagement, contact and relationship-building across different communities.
Beyond electoral numbers and party structures, supporters describe Hon Nwankwo as approachable and accessible. They point to a politician who remains available across different settings, whether among traditional rulers, market traders, party members or community leaders, and who maintains direct contact with people without distance or barrier.
For many who have followed his political journey, attention extends beyond office history or party strength.
His supporters say that his approach reflects a style of service built on direct contact rather than visibility. They also point to his accessibility, not only to those who come seeking him out, but also to people he reaches out to across different communities. In their view, that consistency has become one of the defining parts of how he is seen in public life.
As Margaret Chase Smith, one of the first women to serve in both chambers of the United States Congress and a long-serving senator from Maine, once said, “Public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the people.”
