By Ndudirim Sylvia Iloka

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening African representation in global institutions as it received Kenya’s candidate for the upcoming International Criminal Court (ICC) judicial elections.

The Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, hosted Kenya’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Isaac Keen Parashina, alongside Hon. Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu of the Supreme Court of Kenya, during a meeting in Abuja on Monday.

The visit focused on presenting Justice Ndungu’s candidature for election to the ICC bench in December 2026 and seeking Nigeria’s backing ahead of the vote, where Africa is expected to secure two judicial seats.

Justice Ndungu highlighted more than three decades of experience across the legal, legislative, and diplomatic sectors. She cited her work as a prosecutor, African Union legal adviser, parliamentarian, and Supreme Court judge, while also noting her contributions to advancing gender justice and victims’ rights through key legislative reforms in Kenya.

She also pointed to Kenya’s adoption of a fully virtual Supreme Court system as an example of judicial innovation that has improved access to justice and operational efficiency.

Addressing the significance of the ICC elections, Justice Ndungu stressed the need for experienced African jurists capable of strengthening engagement between the Court and African states while enhancing confidence in international justice systems.

In response, Ambassador Ahmed praised her credentials and acknowledged the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Kenya. He noted the history of cooperation between both countries on multilateral issues and reiterated Nigeria’s support for qualified African candidates seeking positions in international institutions.

The Permanent Secretary assured the Kenyan delegation that its request for support would be considered through established diplomatic channels.
