President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has urged Nigerians to remain united, resilient and actively involved in nation-building as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
Akpabio, in a Democracy Day message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, commended Nigerians for sustaining democracy despite challenges and difficult moments experienced over the years.
He described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a testament to the determination and endurance of its people, noting that while mistakes had been made along the way, the nation remained on course toward achieving its aspirations.
“On behalf of the 10th National Assembly, I congratulate every Nigerian for the sustenance of democracy for close to three decades. Mistakes have been made in the course of this journey but we will surely get to the desired destination with your support,” he stated.
The Senate President urged citizens not to lose faith in democratic governance, warning against attempts by forces he described as agents of backwardness whose objective is to undermine the democratic process.
According to him, democracy must go beyond periodic elections and be firmly rooted in accountability, justice, compassion and service to the common good.
Akpabio also called on Nigerian youths to take a more active role in politics and governance, stressing that they represent the future of the nation’s leadership.
“As we commemorate June 12, I wish to encourage the youth not to sit on the fence but be active participants in the nation’s political activities. The youths constitute the fulcrum of those who will succeed us tomorrow,” he said.
He further stated that Nigerians should recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, transparency, accountable government, social justice and active citizen participation.
On the country’s security challenges, Akpabio appealed to citizens to unite and cooperate with government efforts aimed at tackling insecurity across the nation.
He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to restoring peace and securing the release of persons held in captivity.
“I urge every Nigerian to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in her efforts in fighting terrorism. We understand the pains you are going through but the government is not resting on its oars and hopefully we shall overcome this current challenge and all will be well with Nigeria,” he added.
Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the struggle for democratic rule and to commemorate the country’s return to civil governance after years of military administration.
