United States-based pediatric critical care specialist and frontline All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Orumba North and South Federal Constituency seat in the forthcoming general election, Dr. Odiraa Nwankwor, is set to receive the Philanthropist of the Year Award at the 2026 Anambra Man of the Year (AMTY) Awards in recognition of what organisers described as sustained impact in healthcare delivery, humanitarian intervention and community development.
The organisers said the decision followed a detailed assessment of his philanthropic footprint, particularly his medical assistance programmes, education support initiatives and welfare interventions targeted at vulnerable groups in both Nigeria and diaspora-linked communities. They noted that his work has consistently reflected a blend of professional medical service and structured humanitarian outreach.
The award ceremony is scheduled to hold on July 18 at the Stanel Dome, Awka, as part of the fifth edition of the AMTY Awards, a platform dedicated to recognising Anambra indigenes whose contributions have influenced development across public service, private sector engagement and community development.
Dr. Nwankwor who is an associate professor, who currently serves as a Pediatric Intensivist at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, United States, has built a medical career spanning clinical practice, teaching and critical care specialization, while maintaining active engagement in healthcare-related philanthropy in Nigeria. His work in the United States has positioned him within advanced pediatric emergency and intensive care systems, where he is involved in the management of critically ill children requiring specialized intervention.
His clinical responsibilities apart, Nwankwor has become widely known for his medical outreach initiatives aimed at bridging healthcare access gaps in underserved communities. Through these interventions, he has supported indigent patients with financial assistance for treatment, facilitated access to specialized care and contributed to life-saving medical interventions for families unable to bear the cost of critical healthcare services.
He is also credited with playing a supporting role in the development of pediatric intensive care capacity in Nigeria, including efforts linked to the establishment of Nigeria’s first organised Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State. In addition, he has facilitated the donation of medical equipment and supplies to hospitals in Anambra state and other areas, particularly in areas where healthcare infrastructure remains limited.
In the education sector, Nwankwor has funded scholarship programmes for students, supported academic development initiatives and provided financial assistance aimed at reducing barriers to education for young people from low-income backgrounds. His philanthropic work has also extended to widows, persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable populations who benefit from structured welfare support programmes initiated or supported by him.
In political arena, he is regarded as a frontline APGA candidate for the Orumba North and South Federal Constituency, ahead of the forthcoming general election. His entry into active politics has been linked by supporters to his longstanding community engagement and advocacy for improved healthcare and social services at the grassroots level.
The organisers of the AMTY Awards said this year’s recognition places emphasis on individuals whose work demonstrates measurable social impact, noting that Nwankwor’s contributions in medicine, humanitarian service and community development distinguished him among recipients selected for the 2026 edition.
