Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their longstanding bilateral relationship, with renewed emphasis on security cooperation, trade, investment, regional stability, and economic development following a high level diplomatic meeting in Abuja.
The discussions took place on Monday when Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, received the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, in Abuja. The meeting focused on broadening strategic cooperation between both countries and advancing shared priorities aimed at promoting peace, security, and sustainable economic growth.
During the talks, both sides reviewed the progress made in existing areas of collaboration while identifying new opportunities to deepen engagement in critical sectors. These included maritime security, counter terrorism, intelligence sharing, migration management, trade, technology, healthcare, investment promotion, and regional peace initiatives.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye described the United States as one of Nigeria’s most important strategic partners and expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen the longstanding diplomatic relationship between both nations.
He noted that the Nigeria and United States Joint Working Group has continued to serve as an effective platform for advancing bilateral cooperation, adding that preparations have reached an advanced stage for the next round of the Joint Working Group meeting scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., in August 2026.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the country’s security challenges through strengthened law enforcement operations, improved intelligence gathering and sharing, effective prosecution of terrorism related offences, enhanced protection of vulnerable communities, and sustained efforts to secure strategic locations, including the Gulf of Guinea and the Lake Chad Basin.
Speaking on concerns surrounding security and human rights, Enikanolaiye stressed that although Nigeria continues to contend with complex security threats, the situation should not be misconstrued as state sponsored religious persecution or genocide. He maintained that the government remains committed to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or background, while ensuring strict adherence to the rule of law and constitutional guarantees.
In his remarks, Garcia described Nigeria as one of the United States’ most valued and influential partners on the African continent, noting that relations between both countries have continued to expand across several sectors of mutual interest.
He observed that bilateral cooperation has grown significantly in trade, technology, healthcare, maritime security, counter terrorism, and other strategic areas, reflecting the United States’ broader commitment to strengthening economic ties and supporting development across Africa.
The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State also commended Nigeria’s leadership in promoting maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and its active contribution to regional peace and stability through the Multinational Joint Task Force. He reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its security architecture, enhance institutional capacity, combat emerging security threats, and create a more conducive environment for economic growth and investment.
Both officials acknowledged the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in addressing regional and global challenges, emphasizing that continued collaboration would further consolidate the strategic partnership between Abuja and Washington.
At the end of the meeting, Nigeria and the United States reaffirmed their resolve to sustain regular high level engagements, deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, strengthen people to people exchanges, and continue resolving outstanding issues through constructive dialogue as part of efforts to further reinforce the enduring partnership between both countries.
