President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is taking decisive steps to tackle insecurity across the country, expressing confidence that the challenge would soon become a thing of the past.
Akpabio gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving members of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, led by its National President, Dr. Lima Ahmed, during a courtesy visit to his office at the National Assembly.
According to a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the President of the Senate on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was giving the security situation the highest level of attention, citing the recent rescue of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State as evidence of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“On behalf of the Nigerian Senate, I welcome you to the National Assembly. I am equally very happy to receive you in my office. As Nigerians, we are all aware of the insecurity challenges we are currently facing and all I can say is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is giving the situation its utmost attention and that is what led to the recent release of the schoolchildren that were abducted in Oyo State.
“The current administration is doing a whole lot and I can assure you that very soon, the issue of security would be a thing of the past. Don’t rely on what you hear or see on the social media; they are not a true reflection of what is happening in our country,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President also spoke on women’s participation in politics, attributing the reluctance of many women to support fellow women seeking elective offices to the negative experiences created by some female office holders who, according to him, failed to justify the confidence reposed in them.
He stressed the need for women in leadership positions to demonstrate integrity, competence and commitment in order to encourage greater support for female participation in governance and inspire more women to seek public office.
Akpabio further assured the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria of the support of the Senate for its forthcoming international ladies golf tournament scheduled to hold at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
Earlier, the National President of the association, Dr. Lima Ahmed, thanked the Senate President for granting the delegation audience and formally invited him to attend the international tournament.
She also decorated Akpabio as the Grand Patron of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria in recognition of his support for the association.
