The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called for stronger unity among Ndi Igbo and urged the community to create more opportunities for women in leadership. Ike made the call on Thursday in Abuja while receiving members of the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja, LAJA, on a courtesy visit.
She described the visit as a refreshing experience, coming after what she termed “a lack of solidarity to stand by one another irrespective of differences”, stressing that unity must go beyond cultural gatherings to practical support during critical moments.
The NUJ FCT Chairman also appreciated colleagues from other parts of the country, particularly northern Nigeria, for the encouragement and cooperation she has received in her leadership journey. She said such support should inspire stronger bonds within the Igbo community.
She further charged journalists to build lasting legacies through ethical, balanced and accurate reporting, while urging the Igbo community to promote and celebrate women in leadership positions.
Expressing optimism about future collaboration, Ike said the partnership with LAJA would help amplify positive narratives, strengthen professional ties and demonstrate that women are capable of providing effective leadership.
Speaking earlier, members of LAJA said they came to formally introduce the association to the NUJ FCT Chairman and to assure her of their support.
They noted that LAJA was established to foster unity among journalists of Anambra extraction and to ensure members support one another during critical moments.
The association expressed confidence that a stronger and more united platform would help counter divisive narratives in the future.
LAJA also extended a hand of fellowship to the NUJ-FCT Chairman and invited her to its future programmes as both organisations work to advance professionalism and solidarity within the media industry
