The Office of former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has dismissed allegations made by Mr. Solomon Ighoyohwo, describing them as inaccurate and inconsistent with the facts surrounding their past relationship.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Senator’s Media Adviser, Sunny Areh, the office said it was necessary to clarify the issues raised by Ighoyohwo in recent media interviews, insisting that Senator Omo-Agege fulfilled every commitment made to him during his period of service.
According to the statement, Ighoyohwo first came into contact with the Senator during the 2019 All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign in Ethiope East Ward 5, Oviorie, where he introduced himself as the leader of a political support group. It said Senator Omo-Agege, in appreciation of the commitment shown by party supporters during the campaign, made several commitments to them, including Ighoyohwo.
The office explained that after Omo-Agege became Deputy President of the Senate, Ighoyohwo was appointed as a Legislative Aide. Throughout his tenure, it said, he received his salary and all statutory entitlements in full and on time, stressing that there were no outstanding obligations owed to him.
The statement further noted that in 2022, Ighoyohwo voluntarily resigned both his appointment and his membership of the APC before joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It added that the decision was entirely his and was accepted without any dispute.
According to the office, Ighoyohwo later worked for the PDP during the 2023 general election and campaigned for the party’s governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori, against Senator Omo-Agege. It stated that after Governor Oborevwori’s subsequent defection to the APC, Ighoyohwo also became part of that political movement, making any commitments arising from those associations matters for those involved to address.
The statement maintained that it was unreasonable for Ighoyohwo to hold Senator Omo-Agege responsible for his present situation years after leaving his employment and political camp. It also pointed out that Senator Omo-Agege is now a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and therefore has no responsibility for appointments or welfare matters within the APC.
The office described the allegations as part of a renewed political smear campaign aimed at dragging the Senator into issues unrelated to him. It expressed sympathy for Ighoyohwo’s personal circumstances but said he should not allow himself to be used for political purposes.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Omo-Agege owes Mr. Ighoyohwo nothing. All obligations owed to him were fully discharged while he served in this Office,” the statement said.
It added that Senator Omo-Agege bears no ill will towards his former aide and wishes him well, while remaining focused on his campaign for the Delta Central Senatorial District under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
The office also urged members of the public and the media to disregard what it described as attempts to exploit personal decisions for political gain.
