Senator Dr Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, has distributed free fertilizers to more than 2,500 farmers across the seven local government areas that make up the district, in a fresh intervention aimed at improving farm productivity and supporting food production.
The intervention was launched on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area, during the second edition of Nwoye’s farmers’ empowerment programme. The fertilizers are to be distributed to beneficiaries across the various communities in Anambra North.
The seven local government areas covered by the programme are Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Oyi, Ogbaru, Onitsha North and Onitsha South. Representatives of the seven councils were present at the launch to receive the fertilizer allocations for onward distribution to farmers in their respective areas.
The programme was unveiled by Chief Emeka Chinwuba on behalf of Senator Nwoye. The Senator said the intervention was conceived in response to the difficulties confronting smallholder farmers, particularly the rising cost of farm inputs and limited access to the resources required to increase production.
Nwoye said improved access to fertilizers would help farmers raise yields, expand their cultivation and improve household incomes, while contributing to the wider effort to strengthen food production. He also linked the programme to the Federal Government’s food security drive, stressing the need for practical support for farmers at the grassroots.
The latest intervention adds agriculture to a series of constituency programmes through which Nwoye has sought to support different groups across Anambra North. In January 2024, he empowered about 14,000 constituents with a range of items including engine boats, sewing machines, grinding machines, generators, agricultural inputs and cash support, with farmers and youths among the beneficiaries.
His constituency interventions have also included support for fishermen, skills training and equipment for artisans, women and young people, as well as infrastructure projects across the district. Reports on his first year in office listed projects including a fish farm and poultry cluster at Nsugbe, market facilities, roads, community infrastructure, youth facilities and other constituency projects.
More recently, Nwoye distributed more than 1,500 solar-powered streetlights for deployment across the 99 wards of Anambra North as part of his Light Up Anambra North initiative, with the stated objective of improving illumination, security and economic activity in communities.
Nwoye, who became Senate Minority Whip in April 2026, later moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May. He subsequently secured the NDC senatorial ticket for Anambra North at the party’s 2026 primaries, making him the party’s candidate for the district in the 2027 election.
Nwoye is set for the 2027 contest as a frontline candidate seeking another term in Anambra North, with his campaign expected to draw substantially on his extensive record of constituency interventions, empowerment programmes and infrastructure projects.
