The death of the Executive Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has been described as a major loss to his family, the Commission, the NPC Press Corps and the country.
Wushishi died in Abuja on Friday, according to a tribute issued by the Chairman of the NPC Press Corps, Joshua Adams.
Adams said the late chairman devoted himself to public service with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility, particularly at a Commission whose work provides important population and demographic information for government planning.
He said Wushishi’s time at the NPC was marked by his interest in population management, demographic planning and the production of reliable data, which are needed by government and other institutions in making decisions on national development.
The Press Corps chairman described Wushishi as a public servant who related with colleagues and staff with humility and a clear commitment to his responsibilities.
Adams also spoke about the late chairman’s relationship with journalists covering the Commission, recalling his willingness to engage with the media and ensure that the work of the NPC received proper public attention.
“As Chairman of the Press Corps, in all our meetings with him, he showed great commitment in working with the media to advance the narratives of the Commission,” Adams said.
He recalled Wushishi telling members of the Press Corps: “I love the media, and I will do everything possible to ensure you do your work professionally.”
Adams said the statement reflected the late chairman’s understanding of the role of journalists in informing Nigerians about the work of the Commission and population issues affecting the country.
He said Wushishi’s contributions to the NPC and his service to Nigeria would be remembered by those who worked with him, adding that his death had left the Commission, its staff and the Press Corps mourning.
Adams expressed condolences to Wushishi’s family, friends, colleagues and the staff of the National Population Commission, praying that God would give them the strength to bear the loss and grant the deceased eternal rest.
