Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard and other corporate organisations have thrown their weight behind the 5th edition of Cycling Lagos, an initiative aimed at promoting cycling, environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.
The 2026 edition of the event is scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 12, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, with the growing support from the private sector expected to give further impetus to the anniversary edition.
Union Bank, speaking on its sponsorship of the event in Lagos, said its decision was informed by the impact of Cycling Lagos on the state, stressing that the initiative goes beyond sporting activities to address issues relating to environmental sustainability.
“Our support for this project is in recognition of the impact that this initiative has on the State, which extends beyond sport event into environmental sustainability,” the bank stated.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Cycling Africa, Bamidele Adeleye, said the increasing participation of corporate organisations in the event was an indication that the private sector was beginning to recognise the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling environmental challenges while encouraging healthy lifestyles and sustainable development.
Adeleye expressed appreciation to Union Bank, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard, Lagos State Cycling Association and other organisations supporting the 5th Cycling Lagos for identifying with the vision of the initiative.
He said Cycling Lagos had gradually developed from a cycling competition into a wider platform for promoting healthier communities, environmental responsibility, recycling and sustainable development.
“We are particularly encouraged by the support from corporate organisations that understand that cycling can be a powerful platform for communicating important messages about the environment and sustainability,” Adeleye said.
He added that the organisers remained committed to using the 5th anniversary edition to deepen conversations around recycling and encourage individuals, businesses and governments at all levels to take practical steps towards building a cleaner and more sustainable society.
The 5th Cycling Lagos, organised by Cycling Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Cycling Association, is themed “Trash to Treasure”, with emphasis on recycling, environmental consciousness and the need to unlock the economic and environmental opportunities presented by Nigeria’s waste management sector.
As part of activities marking the event, the organisers will hold the 5th Cycling Lagos Webinar on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The webinar, themed “Trash to Treasure: Unlocking Recycling Capacity for a Sustainable Future,” will bring together experts, policymakers, environmental advocates, recycling practitioners, businesses and other stakeholders to examine practical ways of expanding Nigeria’s recycling capacity.
The September 12 event will feature cycling activities for adults and children, alongside advocacy and awareness initiatives designed to promote cycling and environmental sustainability.
The organisers said the event would also provide an opportunity to further promote public awareness of responsible waste management and highlight the economic possibilities that can be created through recycling and improved waste management practices.
