Texas has executed 41-year-old Nigerian Ker’Sean Olajuwa Ramey, nearly 21 years after he was convicted in connection with the killing of three people during a failed robbery in Edna, Jackson County.
Ramey was executed by lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and was pronounced dead at 6:34 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The case dates back to August 24, 2005, when Ramey, then 20, and his co-defendant, LeJames Norman, went to a residence in Edna reportedly intending to steal cocaine.
According to court records and prosecutors, the men did not find the drugs they were looking for, but three people were killed during the incident.
The victims were identified as Samuel Roberts, 24; Tiffani Peacock, 18; and Celso Lopez, 38. Texas prison records state that all three were shot in the head with a .22-caliber handgun.
Ramey was arrested and convicted of capital murder in January 2007. Prosecutors called several witnesses during the trial, including his former girlfriend, who testified that Ramey admitted his involvement and later discarded two guns. Investigators subsequently recovered the weapons.
Norman later cooperated with investigators and testified against Ramey. He was also sentenced to death and was executed by Texas on September 16, 2026, one week before Ramey’s execution.
Ramey’s lawyers pursued several legal challenges over the years, raising issues concerning jury selection, the effectiveness of his trial counsel and other aspects of his conviction and death sentence. His appeals were unsuccessful, and the United States Supreme Court declined to halt the execution.
In his final statement, Ramey thanked God, his family, friends and fellow prisoners. He apologised to his children for not being present in their lives and spoke about lessons he said he had learned during his years on death row.
Ramey then told the warden that he was ready.
He had spent almost two decades on death row. His execution was the 602nd recorded by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the sixth carried out by the state in 2026.
Ramey’s execution came one week after Norman’s. Both men convicted in connection with the 2005 killings have now been executed.
