ICPC, China’s Xinhua Explore Media Partnership to Boost Anti-Corruption Campaign

By NEWSCOUNT Desk

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is exploring a media partnership with China’s Xinhua News Agency to strengthen public enlightenment, improve professional capacity and give Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts wider international coverage.

The proposal came up when the ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, received a delegation of Xinhua media professionals at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, October 24, 2026, by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications at the ICPC, the discussions centred on news sharing, information exchange and professional cooperation between the two organisations.

The Xinhua delegation was led by Gui Tao, Deputy President of the agency for Africa. He stressed the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in strengthening international cooperation and expressed Xinhua’s readiness to work with the commission to give its anti-corruption activities greater visibility outside Nigeria.

Gui Tao noted that corruption often involves activities across national borders, making cooperation among media organisations and relevant institutions important in tackling the problem.

Responding, Aliyu said the proposed partnership could strengthen relations between Nigeria and China and support efforts to tackle illicit financial flows and the movement of proceeds of crime across borders.

The ICPC chairman also drew attention to the media’s role in informing citizens about corruption and encouraging public participation in efforts to curb the practice.

He called on Xinhua to assist the commission through technology transfer and professional training for staff of its Media and Public Communication Unit. He said such support would improve the commission’s capacity to communicate its activities and reach wider audiences.

Gui Tao expressed the agency’s willingness to provide technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel. He also said Xinhua’s international network could help bring Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and activities to the attention of a wider global audience.

The discussions covered areas of possible cooperation, but the statement did not announce a formal agreement or give a timeline for implementing the proposed partnership.
