Nwachukwu’s 2027 Senate Bid Faces Test of Performance and Political Alliances

By Chris Okafor

Senator Emmanuel C. Nwachukwu, popularly known as Onodugo, is gradually positioning himself for the 2027 general election. His ongoing thank-you tour of Anambra South provides an opportunity to reconnect with constituents, appreciate political supporters and account for his first year in the Senate.

Since winning the August 16, 2025, Anambra South senatorial by-election, Nwachukwu has had to contend with the demands of representing seven local government areas with different needs and expectations. From the industrial concerns of Nnewi to the road, erosion and electricity problems confronting communities in other parts of the district, his responsibilities cover several critical areas of public concern.

His first year in office has seen legislative interventions, engagements with federal agencies and proposed constituency projects covering road infrastructure, electricity, erosion control, youth employment and community safety. His first-year stewardship account, presented in October 2026, provides an opportunity to examine his activities and the issues requiring further attention.

One of his notable legislative interventions was the motion on the deteriorating Okija Spur-Ihembosi-Ukpor-Ebenator-Ezinifite Road, including a collapsed bridge. The Senate adopted the motion on January 28, 2026, calling for urgent intervention and directing relevant authorities to inspect the affected sections.

The poor condition of the road affects the movement of goods, transportation costs, access to hospitals and schools, as well as the activities of traders and farmers. Raising the matter on the floor of the Senate was a necessary step, but the people who use the road will expect the relevant authorities to follow through with actual repairs.

Nwachukwu has also engaged federal authorities over electricity supply problems and the Nnewi Injection Substation project. In a district where manufacturing, trading and small businesses provide livelihoods for thousands of people, dependable electricity is essential to economic activities. Business owners need improved power supply and practical solutions to the challenges affecting their operations.

His reported interventions on erosion control and the proposed phased installation of more than 3,000 solar-powered streetlights across the district are other areas requiring attention. He has also spoken about efforts to facilitate federal employment opportunities for qualified young people.

The important consideration is the level of progress recorded in these areas. How many streetlights have been installed? What has happened to the proposed road intervention? Have the engagements over electricity resulted in improved supply? How many young people have secured employment through the senator’s efforts?

These are legitimate questions from constituents who expect their representative to account for his stewardship. A comprehensive report should indicate what has been achieved, what is still being pursued and where government action is yet to be secured.

His recent visit to Ekwusigo Local Government Area should also be viewed against this background. Meetings with political leaders, community leaders, party faithful and other stakeholders provide an opportunity for direct interaction with the people and an assessment of their concerns.

A thank-you tour serves a useful purpose when it goes beyond speeches and handshakes. It allows an elected representative to appreciate those who supported him, reconnect with communities and find out whether the issues raised during the election have received attention.

Nwachukwu’s tour also comes as political calculations ahead of 2027 begin to take shape. His constituents will expect more than expressions of gratitude. They will want evidence of effective representation through sustained engagement, practical interventions and accountability.

Nwachukwu won the 2025 by-election with 90,408 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Chief Azuka Okwuosa, who scored 19,847 votes. Donald Amangbo of the African Democratic Congress received 2,889 votes.

The result gave him a substantial margin of victory, but it does not determine the outcome of the next election. The political circumstances in 2027 may be different, and voters will have had more time to assess his performance in office.

His supporters can point to the legislative matters he has raised and his engagements with federal institutions. Those dissatisfied with his representation may question the pace of delivery and seek alternatives. Both positions are part of the democratic process, in which an incumbent is expected to account for his record while other aspirants present their programmes.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance remains an important factor in the political equation. The party has a longstanding political base in Anambra, and its relationship with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration could influence campaign organisation and mobilisation.

Party strength also depends on its ability to maintain internal unity, manage competing interests and sustain the confidence of its members and supporters.

Anambra South comprises Aguata, Ekwusigo, Ihiala, Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Orumba North and Orumba South. Each local government area has its own political interests, community leaders and development priorities. Effective representation requires regular engagement with all seven areas rather than concentrating political attention in a few locations.

The thank-you tour provides an opportunity for the senator to identify grievances, reassure party members and address disagreements before they become more difficult to manage.

Such visits must be followed by consistent engagement. People remember political visits, but they also recall the promises made and whether anything was done afterwards.

Nwachukwu will not be without challengers. Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, an industrialist and former APGA senatorial aspirant, has emerged as a political figure to watch following his move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Onunkwo could provide an alternative platform for voters interested in a different approach to representation, particularly those dissatisfied with existing political arrangements or the pace of development. His business background may also feature in discussions about industrial growth, employment and economic opportunities in the district.

Chief Azuka Okwuosa, who contested the 2025 by-election on the APC platform, is another established figure in Anambra South politics. The political strength of these and other prospective challengers will depend on their organisation, grassroots support and ability to present convincing alternatives to the electorate.

Internal unity will be important to APGA’s preparations. Disagreements over party interests or competing ambitions could affect its campaign, while a coordinated approach would give its candidate the opportunity to present his record and programmes to voters.

The opposition, on its part, will need to offer more than criticism of the incumbent. Voters will expect practical proposals on roads, electricity, erosion, employment and other concerns affecting their communities. Those seeking the senatorial seat must explain how their plans would address these problems.

Nwachukwu also occupies a seat previously held by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, whose political influence was an important feature of Anambra South’s recent history. Ubah had established a strong political presence in the district, and his successor inherited the responsibility of meeting the expectations of constituents familiar with his style of representation.

Nwachukwu now has the opportunity to establish his own record. His legislative motions, engagements with federal agencies and constituency interventions provide material for assessing his performance, but their practical effects will matter more to the people.

A trader in Nnewi may be more concerned about improved electricity than the number of meetings the senator has attended. A farmer or commuter along the Okija-Ihembosi-Ukpor route will be more interested in the condition of the road than another political gathering. A young graduate searching for employment will attach greater importance to a genuine job opportunity than to promises.

These are the issues that will shape discussions in homes, markets, town unions and political meetings as the next election approaches.

Nwachukwu’s supporters will want him to consolidate the work he has started, while his critics will expect him to demonstrate tangible results. His first year in office has given him a record to present, but the extent of delivery on roads, electricity, erosion control and employment will feature prominently in how constituents assess his performance.

His return bid will also be influenced by APGA’s ability to maintain internal cohesion and manage competing interests. The emergence of Ebuka Onunkwo on another political platform, Okwuosa’s previous electoral outing and other possible aspirants will add to the contest. The opposition will equally have to demonstrate its grassroots strength and convince voters that it offers a credible alternative.

Nwachukwu’s bid for another term will be judged on more than the 90,408 votes he secured in 2025 or the political relationships he is cultivating through his thank-you tour. His ability to translate legislative interventions and engagements with government agencies into tangible benefits for Anambra South will be central to his case for re-election.
