The APGA candidate for Orumba North and South Federal Constituency, Dr. Odiraa Nwankwor, has described the passage of the State Police Bill by the House of Representatives as a significant Democracy Day gift to Nigerians, saying the development reflects the country’s enduring quest for justice, equity and security.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday, Nwankwor said June 12 has always represented the determination of Nigerians to demand accountable governance and a safer society, noting that the approval of the landmark legislation on the eve of the national celebration was both symbolic and timely.
He stated that for communities across Orumba North and Orumba South, which have long grappled with the limitations of a centralized policing structure, the bill represents more than a legislative achievement.
According to him, the proposed state policing framework is an acknowledgment of the long-standing aspirations of communities seeking a security system that is closer to the people and more responsive to local realities.
Nwankwor noted that with 289 lawmakers voting in support of the measure, the House of Representatives had taken a historic step toward decentralizing Nigeria’s policing architecture.
He stressed that the bill proposes a dual structure comprising Federal and State Police, backed by constitutional safeguards designed to prevent political abuse and undue interference.
“This is precisely the kind of structured and accountable federalism our people deserve,” he stated.
While applauding the Green Chamber for the milestone, Nwankwor observed that the constitutional amendment process is not yet complete, pointing out that the bill must still secure Senate approval, receive the endorsement of two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly and obtain presidential assent before becoming law.
He further stated that the people of Orumba North and South need a vibrant and courageous voice in the National Assembly to support and advance reforms capable of strengthening security and governance across the country.
“Orumba North and South need a vibrant, courageous voice in the next assembly to push these reforms across the finish line and that is exactly the work I am preparing to do in Abuja,” he added.
The APGA House of Representatives candidate urged Nigerians to remain united in their commitment to building a safer, stronger and more prosperous nation as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
