President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday used the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to democratic governance, national unity, economic reforms and improved security, while urging Nigerians to remain steadfast in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
In his nationwide Democracy Day address marking 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, President Tinubu paid tribute to the heroes and martyrs of the June 12 struggle whose sacrifices, he said, laid the foundation for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today. He particularly honoured pro-democracy activists and other patriots who stood against military rule and fought for the restoration of democratic governance in the country.
The President noted that democracy remains the best path to national development, stressing that despite existing challenges, Nigeria’s democratic institutions have continued to grow stronger. He urged citizens to protect and deepen democratic values through active participation, tolerance, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
Addressing concerns over the economy, Tinubu maintained that the difficult reforms introduced by his administration were beginning to produce positive results. He said the policies were aimed at stabilising the economy, restoring investor confidence and laying the foundation for sustainable growth. According to him, the government remains focused on expanding economic opportunities, creating jobs and improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
On security, the President commended members of the armed forces, security agencies and intelligence services for their sacrifices in defending the country against various threats. He assured Nigerians that efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality would continue with renewed vigour. Tinubu also reiterated support for measures designed to strengthen internal security and improve community-based policing across the federation.
The President further appealed to young Nigerians not to lose faith in the country, encouraging them to contribute their talents and energy toward national development. In one of the notable highlights of the address, he urged the youth to see Nigeria as a land of opportunity and a place where they can build their future.
“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship,” the President stated.
Tinubu also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups and community stakeholders to continue supporting peace, reconciliation and nation-building efforts, stressing that government alone cannot achieve the desired transformation without the cooperation of citizens.
The President used the occasion to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing the nation’s 27 years of uninterrupted civilian governance as a remarkable achievement that should inspire greater commitment to national progress. He reaffirmed his resolve to continue implementing policies aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing security and expanding economic prosperity for all Nigerians.
Nigeria’s Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history and won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
