British Oasis Academy, Abuja, a British-style co-educational secondary school, has appointed William Stephen Pope as its new principal, bringing to the school an education professional with more than four decades of experience in South Africa and Nigeria.
Pope, a South African national of Dutch, Irish and Scottish ancestry, has spent more than 45 years working in education, during which he has taken on responsibilities ranging from classroom teaching and curriculum development to school administration and management.
His experience covers several areas of school operations, including student and teacher management, staff welfare and development, marketing, research and curriculum development. His career has therefore combined classroom experience with administrative and organisational responsibilities in the education sector.
Pope has also built considerable experience in Nigeria, having worked in Abeokuta, Lagos and Abuja. His senior appointments have included positions at Grange Schools, Nobelhouse and KIA Lakeside Academy, giving him experience of working within different school environments and with students, teachers and school management.
He has now assumed office as principal of British Oasis Academy, where he is expected to play a key role in the school’s next phase of development.
The academy, which was established 12 years ago in Abuja, operates boarding and day-school programmes. Its facilities include classrooms, laboratories, hostels, medical facilities and sporting and recreational amenities.
Under Pope’s leadership, the school is expected to pursue a reorganisation and repositioning programme aimed at strengthening its academic and extracurricular offerings. The areas identified for attention include academic excellence, discipline, sports development, civic responsibility and leadership training.
The new principal will also oversee the expansion of the academy’s programmes through the introduction of early years education. The planned expansion will see the school add nursery and primary sections to its existing secondary school programme, with the new sections scheduled to commence in September.
The development is expected to broaden the academy’s educational offering and create a structure that accommodates pupils from the early years through secondary education.
Meanwhile, admissions into British Oasis Academy for the 2026/27 academic session are currently ongoing.
