Nigerian virologists have urged citizens to maintain good personal hygiene and take precautionary measures amid concerns over the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
They advised Nigerians to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, avoid contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of infected persons, and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms after possible exposure to the virus.
Ebola is a serious viral disease that can cause fever, headache, muscle pain, weakness, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea. In severe cases, it can lead to bleeding and other life-threatening complications.
The Bundibugyo strain is one of the known variants of the Ebola virus. There is currently no approved vaccine specifically for preventing the disease caused by this strain, making early detection, supportive medical care and effective infection control particularly important.
Health experts have stressed the need for Nigerians to remain alert without giving in to panic. They have also advised the public against spreading unverified information about the disease, urging citizens to rely on updates from recognised health authorities.
People who suspect they may have been exposed to the virus should contact health officials promptly rather than attempt to manage their symptoms at home. Early reporting allows health workers to assess the risk, provide appropriate care and identify others who may have been exposed.
Preventing the spread of Ebola requires public cooperation, including proper hygiene, prompt reporting of suspected cases and compliance with guidance from health authorities.
