At the Nigeria Air Force Centre in Kado District, Abuja, a distinguished gathering of Nigeria’s political and traditional elite filled the hall on Thursday, 20 November 2025, to honour a statesman whose life has become intertwined with the nation’s developmental story. The occasion was the launch of Obong (Arc.) Victor Attah’s long‑awaited biography, coinciding with his 87th birthday—a milestone many described as a testament to endurance, wisdom, and a lifetime of service.
Guests exchanged warm embraces and reflections, creating an atmosphere that blended celebration with solemn tribute. As an old African proverb notes, a wise elder may carry wrinkles, but it is his wisdom that smooths the path for the younger.
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, whose birthday fell on the same day, chaired the event and paid tribute to Attah’s public service. He described Attah’s leadership as rooted not in spectacle but in substance, commending his careful planning, commitment to people‑centered governance, and relentless pursuit of structural reforms. Jonathan said the biography would preserve vital lessons for future generations, portraying Attah as a model of humility and vision.
HRH Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe, presided over the traditional honours. He praised Attah as a bridge‑builder whose tenure transcended politics, fostering unity and shared progress. The Etsu Nupe emphasized that Attah used his office not for personal gain but to build institutions capable of outlasting his term, highlighting the rarity of leadership anchored in service and foresight.
The ceremony drew an impressive roster of guests, including former Edo State Governor Lucky Igbinedion, His Royal Majesty, King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Amayanabo Twon-Brass, General Ike Nwachukwu, Rev. Father George Ehusani of Lux Terra, Most Rev. Dr. Anselm Umoren, Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, former Deputy Governor of Plateau State and two‑time federal minister, Ambassador Godknows Igali, Chairman of PANDEF and chair of the biography launch planning committee, Mr. Labaran Maku, Mr. Chris Okike, and Dr. Udeme.
Speakers shared recollections of Attah’s calm counsel, disciplined mind, and belief that governance should be built on strong ideas and lasting structures. The biography was celebrated not as a mere record of past achievements but as a chronicle of a life defined by vision, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility. Many noted that reaching 87 while remaining intellectually sharp and publicly engaged is a national treasure.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of the book accompanied by colourful fireworks, group photographs, and a cultural dance from Akwa Ibom State.
The biography, Attah: Architect of a New Democratic Dawn, written by veteran journalist Dr. Dele Sobowale, traces the full arc of Attah’s life: his transition from architecture to politics, his bold advocacy for equitable resource control, his infrastructure vision for Akwa Ibom State, and his conviction that leadership should leave enduring legacies. The book details his achievements, from campaigning against the onshore‑offshore oil revenue dichotomy to laying the foundation for Ibom Airport and other strategic projects.
In his remarks, Attah remained characteristically modest. He recounted a story from his architectural days—walking into a hotel in Barbados only to later realize he had designed it—to illustrate that true leadership is about contribution, not credit. Reflecting on his time in office, he called himself “a professional in politics, not a professional politician,” expressing hope that Nigeria’s future would be brighter if more leaders approached governance as a craft rooted in service.
The event ended with a sense of shared appreciation. Attendees left with a vivid impression that the biography was more than a celebration of past achievements; it was a conversation across generations, a recognition of enduring values, and a reminder that Victor Attah’s story continues to inspire far beyond his home state.
