NCC Board Holds Strategic Retreat on Digital Economy

by George Ozalla

The newly constituted Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) last week held a strategic retreat in Uyo aimed at setting priorities and sharpening focus on advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. The retreat brought together Board members, senior management, and expert facilitators to deliberate on governance, regulatory oversight, and policies needed to support the nation’s evolving digital landscape.
The sessions featured expert presentations, including a detailed review of the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003, guidance on effective board governance, insights on global best practices in telecommunications regulation, and foundational principles of corporate governance. Discussions focused on strengthening regulatory credibility, enhancing oversight, and aligning Board decisions with emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Board members emphasised the NCC’s critical role as the apex regulator of telecommunications and digital infrastructure, highlighting the importance of strategic direction, sound governance, and clear regulatory outcomes for consumers, industry players, and national development. The retreat provided a platform for Board members to familiarise themselves with key sector issues as the Commission works to expand broadband access, deepen digital inclusion, and support innovation across the economy.
At the conclusion of the retreat, the leadership reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging regulatory tools to drive growth in the digital economy, ensure resilient telecommunications infrastructure, and protect consumer interests amid rapid technological change. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that such strategic engagements are essential for maintaining coherence in regulatory frameworks and keeping pace with the demands of a dynamic digital sector.
The Nigerian Communications Commission is the independent regulatory authority for the country’s telecommunications sector, tasked with licensing, consumer protection, spectrum management, and fostering an enabling environment for industry growth.
