In a heartwarming display of unity and commitment to Nigeria’s democracy, the country’s political and intellectual elite gathered in Abuja Monday, to celebrate The Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha’s 60th birthday. The Colloquium, themed “Is Democracy Failing in Africa?”, featured a keynote address by His Lordship, Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto and Founder of The Kukah Centre.
Bishop Kukah delivered an insightful critique of Nigeria’s democratic challenges, highlighting the urgent need for democratic renewal. He addressed key threats, including:
Erosion of Democratic Values: Bishop Kukah decried the prioritization of power over service and personal ambition over collective progress, emphasizing that “democracy thrives only when nurtured by men and women of integrity.” Crisis of Leadership: He challenged politicians to embrace leadership focused on nation-building rather than short-term gains. Electoral Integrity: Bishop Kukah condemned vote-buying and manipulation, stressing that elections should ensure genuine representation.
Youth Engagement: He urged young Nigerians to take an active role in shaping the nation’s future.
Faith and Morality in Governance: Bishop Kukah emphasized the role of ethical leadership, advocating for religious institutions to promote accountability and justice.
The event, chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, rounded off with a grand dinner celebrating Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha’s numerous contributions to nation building.
