As part of the Nwanyị Bụ Ife series, we celebrate Prof. Nnenna Oti, a distinguished academic whose exemplary leadership and unwavering integrity have significantly impacted Nigeria’s educational and political landscapes.

Born on November 15, 1958, in Afikpo North, Ebonyi State. Prof. Oti’s academic journey is marked by excellence.

She earned a First Class Honours in Agriculture (Soil Science) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Prof. Oti obtained a Master’s in Soil Science, specialising in Soil Biology and Biochemistry, also from UNN. She achieved a distinction in Irrigation Engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Prof. Oti completed her Ph.D. in Soil and Environmental Conservation at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).

With over 34 years in academia, Prof. Oti has held several pivotal positions at FUTO:

She served three terms as the Head of the Department of Soil Science and Technology in the School of Agricultural and Agriculture Technology (SAAT). She was the immediate past chairperson of the gender policy unit, emphasising her commitment to gender equality. She served two terms as Dean of Postgraduate school, showcasing her dedication to advancing higher education.

In April 2021, Prof. Oti made history by becoming the first female substantive Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, assuming office on June 19, 2021.

Beyond her roles at FUTO, Prof. Oti has authored over 65 academic papers, presented 40 seminar and workshop papers, edited a handbook, delivered 50 public lectures, and produced more than 10 technical reports for the Federal Government of Nigeria.

She has served as a consultant to various government agencies, including TETFund and the Anambra-Imo River Basin Development Authority, providing expertise in soil science and environmental conservation.

Prof. Oti’s integrity was prominently displayed during the 2023 Abia State governorship election, where she served as the Returning Officer. Despite immense pressure, she upheld the sanctity of the electoral process, ensuring that the true choice of the people was reflected. Her unwavering stance earned her commendation from various quarters, including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who praised her for her courage and adherence to truth.

Prof. Oti is married to Dr. Nnannaya Oti, and they are blessed with three children.
