My memorable relationship with Okwadike Dr. Chukwuemeka Pius Ezeife, CON, was built on trust, deep political thoughts, and a shared passion for Nigeria’s progress. As a close associate, I had the rare privilege of witnessing his unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power and his unrelenting advocacy for the rights and dignity of the Igbo people and indeed all Nigerians.
Dr. Ezeife was a man of immense integrity, honesty, tact, confidence, and exceptional boldness – qualities that enabled him to navigate the complex landscape of Nigerian politics with courage and conviction. His life was a testament to his dedication to public service, and his legacy continues to inspire and motivate those who knew him. As Wole Soyinka once said, “The Nigerian project remains a work in progress, and it is up to us to shape its future.” Dr. Ezeife’s life and work embody this belief, as he tirelessly worked towards building a better Nigeria for all.
One of Dr. Ezeife’s notable quotes that resonates with me is: “The government is pushing the South-East out of Nigeria. The Federal Government has a policy, a policy of ‘pull Igbo down’, ‘push Igbo out of Nigeria’.” This statement reflects his deep concern for the marginalization of the Igbo people and his willingness to challenge the status quo. Today I am sure, he would be rejoicing in his grave that, through one of his great admirers and associates, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and other co-sponsors, the South East Development Commission (SEDC) has been birthed, and, by God’s grace, his much-cherished desire to have Mazi Nnamdi Kalu freed may soon be realized!
As a leading figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) many years ago, Dr. Ezeife played a pivotal role in the struggle for democracy and human rights in Nigeria. His activism was driven by a strong sense of justice and a commitment to building a more equitable society. He believed in Nigeria’s potential, often describing it as a “super power” and a richly blessed nation.
Our discussions often ranged from national and global issues to the future of Nigeria and the Igbo people. He shared stories of his short but impactful tenure as the first elected Executive Governor of Anambra State, and his “think home” philosophy of encouraging Igbos to invest more at home. I recall his boisterous laughter and quiet moments in the office, where we would engage in in-depth discussions about the country’s progress and challenges. His love for his family, Nigeria, Africa, and humanity was exceptional, and he inspired me and many others to adopt a similar approach to life.
As Okwadike Nd’Igbo, he was fondly referred to as a champion of Igbo rights and interests, but it went far beyond that – he simply wanted fairness, equity, and justice for all. His legacy extends beyond his political achievements to the impact he had on the lives of those he touched. Dr. Ezeife proudly introduced me to men of substance and honor, and his recommendation carried significant weight. I remember how he would often send me on assignments with maximum confidence, trusting me to deliver results. Not once did I fail him, which underscores the level of trust and close interaction we shared.
Dr. Ezeife’s life was significantly marked by his commitment to public service, and his contributions to Nigeria’s development are immeasurable. When he served as Governor of Anambra State, his tenure was characterized by significant infrastructural development, prudence, think-home investment ideology, and a commitment to education.
I still recall the awful experience after Okwadike’s passing, when I found myself seeking guidance on a pressing matter and instinctively reached for my phone to dial his number, only to realize he was no longer with us. In that moment, I reflected on life, our last discussion, the impermanence of human existence, and the legacy Okwadike left behind.
As we commemorate his death with a joint Thanksgiving Service at Salvation Army Church, Igboukwu, Anambra State on Sunday 27th. April, 2025 for both him and his younger brother, Nze John Okoye Ezeife (Ezechinaemelu), who also recently passed away, and a subsequent book presentation/interdisciplinary
lecture on May 5, 2025, at Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja-FCT, in Okwadike’s honour, we reflect on his remarkable life and times. Let’s not cease to draw inspiration from his honesty, integrity, confidence, and boldness, which culminated in speaking truth to power!
Dr. Ezeife’s life and legacy no doubt embody the spirit of resilience and determination, as aptly captured by Nelson Mandela’s words: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Okwadike was indeed a colossus, an iconic fearless leader par excellence who clamored for fairness, equity, and justice for all, yet remained simple and accessible with a heart of gold.
Personally, Okwadike was more than just a leader; he was my close confidante, hero, mentor, benefactor, advisor, motivator, guarantor, sponsor, educator, and former first Executive Governor of my beloved Anambra State. He was a foremost nationalist, builder, honest and corrupt-free politician, elder statesman, businessman, administrator, and patron of many organizations.
Renowned Author and Poet, Maya Angelou so eloquently put it, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. “Dr. Ezeife’s kindness, empathy, and compassion made a lasting impact on those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to touch lives for generations to come.
Again, as we continue to reflect on Dr. Ezeife’s life and legacy, we are reminded of the importance of living a life of purpose and meaning. The Bible records, “A good name is better than fine perfume” (Ecclesiastes 7:1). Dr. Ezeife’s good name and solid impact will forever be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire us to strive for greatness.
