The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have taken a significant step towards advancing Nigeria’s digital and energy inclusion objectives. On June 27, 2025, the two agencies inaugurated a joint committee to develop modalities for deploying renewable energy to support telecom infrastructure in Nigeria.
NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized that the collaboration aims to bridge the connectivity and power gaps limiting development in Nigeria’s rural and underserved areas. “This partnership has the potential to transform realities and bring opportunity closer to the people,” he said. The initiative supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring no community is left behind in Nigeria’s digital and energy transformation.
The NCC-REA Collaboration Committee will focus on developing integrated solutions to power telecom sites, sharing geospatial data for improved planning, aligning funding frameworks, and tracking socio-economic impact through clear performance indicators. This collaboration is expected to accelerate progress in line with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan and overall sustainable development agenda.
REA Managing Director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential to unlock sustainable development opportunities for millions of Nigerians. The committee’s work is expected to serve as a model for inter-agency cooperation, demonstrating how collaborative governance can drive progress in the nation’s development.
