The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria has called for urgent reforms in the country’s correctional centers, citing systemic bias and inhumane conditions. On the eve of World Mandela Day (July 18), NHRC Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu emphasized the need to reflect on the values of justice, dignity, equality, and compassion championed by Nelson Mandela.
Dr. Ojukwu highlighted the deplorable state of Nigeria’s correctional facilities, which are plagued by overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate healthcare, and lack of resources. He noted that thousands of citizens, mostly due to poverty and limited access to justice, languish in pre-trial detention for years. In contrast, those with greater financial means have better access to legal defense and bail, perpetuating systemic bias.
The NHRC urges the Nigerian government, judiciary, private sector, and civil society to prioritize reforms in detention facilities. Recommended reforms include improving conditions in correctional centers, investing in alternatives to pre-trial detention, ensuring speedy trials, and upholding inmates’ rights. Dr. Ojukwu stressed addressing root causes of incarceration like poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to justice to build a society valuing dignity and human rights for all.
World Mandela Day is observed annually on July 18.
