The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has emphasized the need for judicial reforms to effectively combat corruption in Nigeria. Dr. Aliyu made this call while urging the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to partner strongly with the ICPC in the war against corruption.
According to Dr. Aliyu, the justice sector remains a critical area of concern in the fight against corruption, particularly with regards to bribery involving stakeholders in the justice sector. He highlighted that judicial officials exhibit relatively high bribery prevalence despite limited public contact, underscoring the need for targeted anti-corruption measures.
The ICPC Chairman stressed that investigation and prosecution of cases are pivotal to achieving success in anti-corruption efforts. He emphasized the importance of integrating technology into the administration of justice, citing the admissibility of electronically generated evidence and the introduction of technology in the judicial system as significant steps forward.
Dr. Aliyu’s call for judicial reforms is part of the ICPC’s efforts to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption framework. The Commission has been working to promote public policy and interest of justice in the prosecution of corruption cases and other related offenses. By partnering with the NJI, the ICPC aims to build the capacity of judges and judicial officers to effectively handle corruption cases and promote transparency and accountability in the justice sector.¹
This development is coming as the ICPC continues to make strides in the fight against corruption, having secured several convictions and recovered significant amounts of money and assets from corrupt individuals. The Commission’s efforts are crucial in promoting good governance and accountability in Nigeria.
