The Rivers State Government has announced the commencement of transition activities from emergency rule to democratic governance. This development follows the six-month state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.
A thanksgiving service is scheduled for September 14, 2025, at the Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt. Suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara is expected to resume office on September 18, 2025, along with his deputy and the state assembly.
Recall that the suspension of Governor Fubara and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State were necessitated by a protracted political crisis that had engulfed the state. The crisis had led to heightened tensions, administrative gridlocks, and concerns over governance and stability. In response, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency and appointed a Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), to oversee the state’s affairs and restore normalcy. With the emergency period nearing its end, the transition process is set to restore democratic governance in the state.
