On the 26th of December 1995, a light was born into the world — Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu — a daughter of Anambra soil, born in London, raised in Port Harcourt, and destined to touch lives wherever she went. That light, radiant and gentle, has now been dimmed too soon, but its glow will never be forgotten.
She walked with elegance, spoke with courage, and lived with compassion. A lawyer by training, a journalist by calling, a beauty queen by grace, and above all, a woman of heart. At Arise News, she carried her pen and her voice with dignity, shining light on justice, women’s rights, and the stories that mattered. Beyond the screen, she was a friend, a sister, a colleague who lifted others, whose laughter filled rooms, whose smile eased burdens.
Her death in the heart of Abuja is a wound too deep, a silence too heavy, a question too haunting. Yet even in grief, we honor the life she lived — full of promise, purpose, and poise.
We mourn Somtochukwu, but we also mourn with countless families across Nigeria who lose loved ones daily to violence, neglect, and insecurity. We remember too the security operatives who fall in the line of duty. Her story is theirs, and their story is ours.
Sommie still had so much to give. Though her voice has been stilled, her spirit speaks. May her memory strengthen us to build a country where every life is valued, and where no light is allowed to be extinguished in vain!
