On Saturday, 16 November 2025, the day of the Anambra State gubernatorial election, an encounter with Chief Uzuegbuna “Uzu” Okagbue, the Young Progressive Party’s Deputy Governorship candidate was quite reflective. From the moment he stepped in to share his thoughts on governance, it was clear that this was not a man defined by the heat of electioneering alone. His presence exuded calm determination, an aura of purpose that suggested a focus far beyond the immediate contest.
Uzu hails from Umunnachi in Dunukofia Local Government Area, a community that has long nurtured leaders with a sense of responsibility and vision. His academic foundation in Political Science at the University of Abuja provided him with the analytical tools to understand the complexities of governance, while subsequent executive programmes overseas sharpened his strategic thinking and leadership skills. Before venturing fully into partisan politics, Uzu spent nearly a decade in banking, gaining exposure to organizational management and operational efficiency, experiences he often credits for his structured approach to problem-solving.
His professional background also includes public service under former Governor Willie Obiano, where he served first as Chief of Protocol and later as Deputy Chief of Staff while retaining his protocol responsibilities. Managing these dual roles required not only discipline but also a capacity to balance competing priorities and engage multiple stakeholders effectively. Observing him on election day, it became apparent that these experiences had honed his ability to remain composed under pressure and focused on the tasks that matter. In fact, he emphatically stated that he was not desperate but passionate to see a greater Anambra State.
No doubt, Uzu’s nomination as the YPP Deputy Governorship candidate was met with enthusiastic approval from party leaders, faith communities, and local stakeholders. In announcing him, party officials highlighted his integrity, describing him as someone Ndi Anambra could rely on to support principled leadership. Uzu himself stated: “I bring my competence to complement the leadership of our candidate. I am here to provide that strength, a quiet force that ensures our mission succeeds.” There was no flourish in his words, no unnecessary theatrics — just a measured assurance that he understands responsibility and the weight of public trust.
Security remains a central concern for Uzu. He has warned that rising insecurity in Anambra is not simply a matter for law enforcement but an obstacle that threatens community cohesion, economic growth, and social stability. “At the heart of this is insecurity, an evil that has not only shattered lives, but also crippled our economy and cast fear over even the most sacred communal celebrations,” he stated. He stressed that rebuilding security is essential to restoring confidence among citizens, enabling communities to function and thrive without fear.
On the economic front, Uzu has voiced a vision that challenges conventional approaches. He critiques the concept of an “eight-hour economy,” arguing that it limits the potential for growth and innovation. He advocates for a 24-hour economy supported by modern infrastructure and robust security, suggesting that such a framework would allow businesses to flourish, attract investment, and provide sustainable opportunities for the populace. His ideas reflect a combination of strategic thinking and pragmatism, grounded in the realities of Anambra’s current social and economic context.
During a gathering in his hometown of Umunnachi, Uzu’s connection to the community was palpable. Leaders and residents alike spoke of his genuine care for the public good and his contributions to local development initiatives. One elder remarked that his dedication is rooted not in ambition for its own sake but in a sincere desire to see communities prosper. Observing the exchange, it was clear that Uzu commands respect not only for his intellect but for his authenticity and empathy. “Genuine leadership is about showing up when it matters most,” he told us quietly, reflecting a philosophy that prioritizes action over words.
Throughout our encounter, Uzu displayed a rare balance. He is intellectually sharp, capable of analyzing complex issues with clarity, yet he remains humble. Ambitious, yet grounded in service. His conception of leadership does not rest on showmanship or personal gain. Instead, he embodies a steady, dependable approach that emphasizes delivery, accountability, and trust. His vision for Anambra, and the role he intends to play, is methodical, yet infused with heart, a combination that sets him apart in a political landscape often dominated by failed promises.
Reflecting on leadership more broadly, Uzu referenced a guiding principle he holds: “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality,” a quote attributed to Warren Bennis, the American scholar widely regarded as a pioneer in modern leadership studies. Bennis, who spent decades analyzing what makes leaders effective, argued that vision alone is insufficient; it must be coupled with the practical ability to act decisively and responsibly. For Uzu, this philosophy is more than words; it is a blueprint for how he approaches governance and service.
He spoke of his determination to “restore the shining light Anambra is known for,” framing his aspirations in practical, achievable terms. He sees leadership as a tool for transformation, one that requires both courage and humility. It is clear that Uzu Okagbue measures his success not by accolades or titles, but by the tangible impact he can create in society.
Uzu Okagbue is still someone to watch even when the election is over and his party YPP have clinched third position. His combination of intellect, empathy, and unwavering purpose positions him to make meaningful contributions not only to Anambra State but to Nigeria’s broader governance landscape in the years ahead. This encounter revealed a young leader who is thoughtful, prepared, and quietly ambitious, someone capable of influencing positive change long after the election has passed.
