Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has resigned his appointment, with President Bola Tinubu formally accepting the decision. A letter dated December 1 conveyed Badaru’s resignation, citing health reasons, and the development takes immediate effect. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the acceptance, adding that the President is expected to notify the Senate of a replacement in the coming days.
Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His exit comes at a sensitive time for the administration, following recent declarations aimed at addressing escalating security concerns nationwide. Security analysts say attention will now shift to who assumes leadership at the defence ministry as the government pushes to strengthen its national security framework.
Mohammed Badaru Abubakar served as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before joining the federal cabinet as Minister of Defence. His tenure coincided with intensified security operations across the country.
