Orabike Central School, Enugu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, was transformed into a centre of colour, culture and quiet prestige as Dr Chukwunyelugo, the son of former Governor of Anambra State and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige, performed his traditional marriage rites with Bar Chetanna, daughter of Dr Akubata in the presence of an array of dignitaries, traditional leaders and well-wishers from across the country.
From the early hours of the day, Enugu-Ukwu wore a festive look as guests streamed into the historic town, drawn by the significance of the union and the stature of the families involved. The expansive grounds of Orabike Central School provided a fitting setting for the ceremony, accommodating the large crowd that gathered to witness the age-long rites that formally joined the two families.
The atmosphere was defined by the steady rhythm of traditional music, the soft murmur of greetings exchanged among elders and other guests, and the visual richness of guests dressed in classic Igbo attire. Titled men appeared in flowing wrappers and red caps, while women adorned themselves with coral beads and carefully tied headgears, lending dignity and cultural depth to the occasion.
At the heart of the ceremony was the groom, Raphael Chukwunyelugo Ngige, who arrived in the company of his kinsmen, projecting composure and respect for tradition. The bride, elegantly dressed in full traditional regalia, was presented by her family in accordance with custom, drawing warm applause from the gathering. The formal presentation of palm wine, prayers by elders, and the breaking of kolanut were conducted with measured solemnity, sealing the marriage rites in line with Igbo tradition.
Senator Chris Ngige, visibly relaxed and in high spirits, received guests alongside members of his extended family, exchanging pleasantries and acknowledging greetings from across political, social and professional divides. The ceremony signalled not only a family milestone but also the enduring place of culture in public life.
The event attracted a distinguished list of guests, led by the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, whose presence added weight to the occasion. Also in attendance were Senators Osita Izunaso, Uche Ekwunife, Hon. Uche Harris Okonkwo, Hon George Ozodinobi, former Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, serving and former members of the National and State Assemblies, senior government officials, captains of industry, and prominent party leaders from within and outside the state.
Traditional rulers from various communities, leaders of thought, senior academics, and close associates of the Ngige family also attended, reflecting the wide network of relationships built over decades of public service. Their presence turned the ceremony into a broad gathering of influence, yet the tone remained deeply rooted in family and tradition.
As the rites concluded, the ceremony gave way to open celebration. Guests were treated to an assortment of traditional dishes and refreshments, while music and light dancing filled the air. Conversations flowed easily, blending politics, community affairs and personal reflections, as the event stretched into the evening.
The traditional marriage at Orabike Central School stood as a moment of cultural affirmation, drawing attention not through spectacle alone but through the calm dignity with which it was conducted. For both Ngige and Akuabata families, it marked a significant chapter, while for Enugu-Ukwu and Alor, it became another memorable gathering etched into the town’s social history.
