The Nigerian Communications Commission has emerged as the winner of a prestigious international award for its flagship Digital Awareness Programme at the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society Prizes in Geneva, Switzerland. The programme was recognized in Category C3 for Access to Information and Knowledge after receiving the highest number of votes among hundreds of entries worldwide.
Launched in 2006, the initiative provides secondary schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones with information and communication technology resources and internet connectivity to strengthen teaching, learning, and research. More than 300 schools have benefited from the programme since its inception.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, received the award, expressing gratitude to the International Telecommunications Union and the WSIS community for recognizing Nigeria’s efforts to expand digital access. He emphasized that the honor would motivate the Commission to deepen its work in bridging the digital divide and supporting national development.
In addition, four other Nigerian digital projects were nominated in the Champions Category at the WSIS Prizes ceremony, highlighting the country’s growing role in leveraging technology for development.
