The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the brutal killing of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano State, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in an attack that has shocked the community.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, described the incident as a crime against humanity and a grave violation of the constitutional right to life, as well as international human rights standards to which Nigeria is a party. He called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice, warning that impunity must never be tolerated and such acts of violence must not be allowed to fester in communities.
Dr. Ojukwu extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims, the people of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the entire Kano State, emphasizing that the NHRC stands in solidarity with them during this period of grief. He also reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to protecting and promoting human rights and pledged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the incident is properly investigated and the culprits brought to book.
The NHRC further urged all stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of human life and foster a society where peace, justice, and respect for human dignity prevail. The tragic incident highlights the urgent need for increased security vigilance and community engagement to prevent similar occurrences.
