Peter Ameh has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of imposing what he described as majoritarian tyranny in Nigeria’s legislative process, warning that the development poses a serious threat to democratic accountability and the independence of the parliament.
According to a statement by Ameh, the former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, the current situation within the National Assembly reflects what he termed a dangerous pattern where majority power is being used to dominate proceedings and suppress opposing voices.
His reaction follows growing concerns over recent developments in the National Assembly, where the ruling party’s numerical strength has enabled it to decisively control legislative decisions, often leaving opposition lawmakers with limited influence over debates, motions, and critical national issues. The situation has sparked wider debate among political stakeholders and observers about the balance of power and the health of Nigeria’s democratic system.
Ameh stated that democracy must not be reduced to a system where the majority imposes its will without regard for fairness, inclusiveness, and institutional balance. He warned that such actions could weaken democratic institutions and erode public trust in governance.
He further alleged that the ruling party’s approach reflects fear of transparent and credible electoral processes, insisting that Nigerians remain resolute and committed to defending democratic values and ensuring that leadership remains accountable to the people.
Ameh emphasized that majoritarian dominance must never be allowed to override democratic principles, noting that the strength of any democracy lies in its ability to protect minority voices and uphold the rule of law.
