INEC Reschedules 2027 Presidential, NASS Polls to January 16

By George Ozalla

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, setting January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly polls.
The commission also scheduled February 6, 2027, for governorship elections and polls into the State Houses of Assembly across the country.
INEC said the change was necessitated by envisaged public holidays and other operational factors that could affect the smooth conduct of the elections if the earlier dates were maintained. The commission noted that aligning nationwide polls close to major holidays could present challenges in logistics, security coordination, movement of materials, and deployment of personnel.
The adjustment is aimed at giving political parties, candidates, electoral staff, and security agencies a clear window to prepare for a credible and well-organized electoral exercise. Under the previous timetable, the general elections were slated for February 2027 in line with Nigeria’s electoral cycle.
The Independent National Electoral Commission is constitutionally mandated to organize, supervise, and conduct elections into federal and state offices across Nigeria, including voter registration, party oversight, and declaration of results.
