The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, has reaffirmed that women’s rights are fundamental human entitlements, not concessions from men, calling on all stakeholders to protect them.
Speaking at a sideline event during the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York, Dr. Ojukwu emphasized that women are demanding their rights, not privileges, and urged men to actively support gender equity. The event, organized by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, highlighted the importance of inclusion in decision-making. “You cannot talk about women without having them at the table,” he said.
Dr. Ojukwu disclosed that the National Human Rights Commission has adopted a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and increased women’s leadership representation, with 10 out of 15 director positions now held by women. He stressed that when women feel safe and empowered, they perform exceptionally, noting that economic support and public awareness are key to ending gender-based violence.
According to a statement signed by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, the Commission’s initiatives reflect Nigeria’s commitment to advancing gender equality and fostering partnerships that promote justice and inclusive development. Nigerian delegates at the event included the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Wife of the Oni of Ife, Her Regal Majesty Temitope Ogunwusi.
