Former Ogun State governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, on April 1, 2026 unveiled four new books in a high-profile public presentation held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, drawing a wide circle of Nigeria’s political leadership, traditional authority, and close associates ahead of his 70th birthday scheduled for April 6.
The hall carried a calm but charged atmosphere as guests filtered in through steady security checks, with conversations largely centred on Daniel’s long public life and the unusual step of documenting his political and legal experiences in detail. Copies of the books were arranged at strategic points within the venue, while attendees took time to browse through them before the formal unveiling began.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, alongside former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, who also served as chairman of the occasion. Their presence, alongside other top political actors, gave the gathering a rare convergence of Nigeria’s past and present leadership.
Also in attendance were former Senate President Adams Oshiomhole, serving and former lawmakers including Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as well as traditional rulers led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. Representatives of his alma mater, Baptist Boys High School Abeokuta, were also present, adding a personal layer to the political gathering.
The four publications unveiled include Daniel in the Lion’s Den, My March Through the Court, Path to Justice, and Otunba Gbenga Daniel in the Eyes of Time. Together, they trace his journey from business and engineering into politics, while also addressing the legal battles that followed his tenure as governor and the broader questions of legacy, leadership, and public scrutiny.
As each book was introduced, copies were made available to guests, many of whom paused to engage with the material, flipping through pages that reflected not just memoir but a personal account of governance under pressure, court proceedings, and political transitions.
In remarks delivered on behalf of the President, Tinubu described Daniel as a longtime ally and friend, acknowledging his contributions across engineering, business, and politics, and his continued relevance in national affairs. The tribute drew a warm response from the audience, many of whom nodded in quiet agreement as references were made to Daniel’s years in public service.
Former President Jonathan, who chaired the occasion, noted that the books would serve as reference material for students of politics and governance, especially those seeking to understand the intersections of power, law, and public life in Nigeria. He described the effort as a personal archive that places lived experience on record rather than memory.
The event also carried moments of personal recognition. Members of his family, political associates, and old school representatives offered goodwill messages, while the Ogun State House Forum presented him with an award of excellence in recognition of his public service.
