The political atmosphere in Delta State is tightening following the fallout from Ughelli, where actions linked to party structures have stirred fresh tension around Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege.
What happened in Ughelli has not been dismissed as routine party activity. Those watching events closely say the manner in which local actors moved has raised eyebrows, especially as it appeared directed at a figure who still holds strong influence in Delta Central.
Within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ede Dafinone has continued his engagements across the district. That in itself is not unusual. What has drawn attention is the impression that some elements within the structure are no longer neutral in how they relate to key figures in the same political space.
For many in Delta Central, the issue is not about who supports who. It is about how that support is expressed. There is growing unease that the line between political preference and open pushback is beginning to blur, and that is where the concern lies.
Omo-Agege is not a fringe player in the state. He has built his base over time and remains one of the most recognisable political figures from the area. Moves that appear to isolate him are therefore being read in a wider context, especially with the next election cycle not too far away.
Some voices within the Urhobo community have also raised a different concern. They point to a pattern where internal disagreements are allowed to spill into the open, often weakening collective strength. The feeling is that political competition should not turn into a situation where leaders from the same bloc are openly pulled down.
Attention has naturally turned to Governor Oborevwori. As the sitting governor and a prominent Urhobo figure, expectations are higher. Those expectations are not just about governance, but also about how political differences are managed within the fold.
There has been no direct response addressing the Ughelli development, but the conversation it has sparked is unlikely to fade quickly. What is clear is that the ground is beginning to shift, and those shifts are already shaping how political actors relate to one another in Delta Central.
Even so, those familiar with Omo-Agege’s political journey say he has a record of weathering pressure and returning to relevance at critical moments. It is that resilience that keeps him in the conversation, and it suggests that any effort to edge him out may not be as straightforward as it appears.
