Former Governor of Anambra State and leading opposition figure, Peter Obi, has resigned his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing deepening internal crisis and what he described as a toxic political environment.
Obi announced his decision on Sunday, explaining that it followed careful reflection on developments within the party and the broader political space in the country. He pointed to persistent internal disagreements, leadership challenges, and growing instability within party structures as factors that made his continued stay difficult.
He said the prevailing atmosphere within the political system has become increasingly tense, with pressure and uncertainty undermining meaningful participation and limiting the ability of individuals to contribute constructively to governance.
While noting that he holds members of the party in high regard, Obi stated that the level of division within the ADC had reached a point where his continued membership could further complicate efforts at cohesion. He said stepping aside had become necessary to allow the party address its internal issues without added strain.
His resignation comes at a time the ADC has been contending with internal disputes over leadership and strategic direction, amid efforts to position itself as a viable platform within the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s opposition landscape, with a strong support base that cuts across several demographics.
The African Democratic Congress, founded in 2005, is one of Nigeria’s registered political parties and has over the years projected itself as an alternative platform focused on democratic reforms and inclusive governance.
