By Ndudirim Sylvia Iloka

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beijing has celebrated the country’s victorious football team following its triumph at the recently concluded Flames Beijing World Cup, highlighting the growing importance of sports diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s image abroad and strengthening ties with Nigerians in the diaspora.

The tournament, regarded as a community-driven amateur football competition, attracts teams largely from the African diaspora and other international communities resident in China. Nigeria’s team emerged champions after a string of impressive performances during the 2026 edition of the competition.
To honour the achievement, the Nigerian Embassy hosted a special reception attended by embassy officials, members of the Nigerian student community, supporters, and the players who represented the country at the tournament.

Speaking during the event, embassy officials described the team’s success as a reflection of discipline, patriotism, resilience, and excellence. They noted that the reception was not only organised to celebrate the players’ victory but also to strengthen engagement between the mission and Nigerians living in China, particularly students and young professionals.
According to the officials, the team’s achievement extended beyond football, serving as a symbol of national unity and positive representation of Nigeria on the international stage.

They praised the players for displaying determination, teamwork, and discipline throughout the competition, qualities they said enhanced Nigeria’s reputation among participating nations and international observers.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, Mrs. Ikerionwu Chiegonu Edith, congratulated the players for what she described as an outstanding accomplishment. She stated that the victory reflected the resilience, unity, and strength commonly associated with the Nigerian spirit.
She further noted that football remains a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and borders, adding that the team successfully projected a positive narrative about Nigeria through sports. Edith also commended the players for their sacrifices and dedication, assuring them of the Embassy’s continued support for initiatives that promote Nigeria’s image and foster stronger relations within the Nigerian community in China.

Responding on behalf of the players, the team captain expressed appreciation to the Embassy for recognising the team’s achievement and supporting them throughout the tournament. He described the victory as historic, noting that it marked Nigeria’s first participation and first triumph in the competition.
The captain also expressed optimism that the success would encourage stronger collaboration between Nigerian students in China and the Embassy, while creating opportunities for increased institutional support for sports and youth development initiatives within the diaspora community.

The team’s coach equally acknowledged the contributions of the Embassy, supporters, assistant coaches, medical volunteers, and members of the Nigerian community in Beijing. While admitting that there were organisational challenges during the tournament’s opening ceremony, he accepted responsibility and pledged improved coordination in future competitions.
He added that the tournament had created an important platform for strengthening relationships between Nigerian students and the Embassy community in China.

During the reception, embassy officials also encouraged Nigerians residing in China to maintain regular communication with the mission, especially regarding immigration and passport-related matters. They stressed that many avoidable consular issues often arise from delayed passport renewals and failure to seek timely guidance from the Embassy.

Also present at the event was a representative from the Office of the Spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Raymond Na’anlep Delmut, who commended the Embassy for promoting citizen engagement and celebrating Nigerian excellence abroad. He also presented one of his authored books to the Embassy leadership as part of efforts to encourage intellectual and cultural diplomacy among Nigerians overseas.
