The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for sustained cooperation between the media and security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen press freedom and promote national development.
The union made the call in a media release to commemorate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, noting that a free, independent and responsible press remains central to democracy, human rights and national growth.
In the statement signed by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the NUJ said this year’s theme, shaping a future at peace, reflects the realities within Nigeria’s security and governance landscape and highlights the role of journalism in fostering accountability and stability.
The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) observed what it described as a gradual improvement in relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, pointing to a reduction in cases of intimidation, harassment and arbitrary arrests of journalists.
The union commended the leadership of the Department of State Services (DSS), particularly the Director General, for encouraging more professional engagement with journalists, adding that such collaboration is necessary for building trust and ensuring a peaceful society.
It, however, stressed that the progress must be maintained through continuous dialogue, transparency and respect for the rule of law, noting that press freedom remains a constitutional right critical to human rights, development and national security.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) also urged the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies to adopt similar approaches by respecting the rights of journalists and providing an enabling environment for media practice without fear.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and called on its members to uphold professional ethics, with emphasis on accuracy, fairness and public responsibility in the discharge of their duties.
It added that the media and security institutions should be seen as partners working towards peace, protection of human rights and national development, rather than as opposing forces.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) further called on government, security agencies, the media and citizens to renew their commitment to protecting press freedom as a foundation for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
