There are moments when public service quietly slips into the private spaces of ordinary lives and alters destinies in ways no speech or policy document can fully explain. One such moment unfolded at the residence of Senator Victor Umeh as gratitude, memory and fulfilment met in a deeply emotional encounter.
Mr Ikechukwu Igwenagu of Umuokpu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State arrived with his daughter, Ms Nkiruka Igwenagu, not to seek assistance, but to present evidence of a promise fulfilled. In her possession was her National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate, brought to the man whose intervention nearly a decade ago rescued her academic future.
Ms Nkiruka, a graduate of Architecture from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, traced her journey back to 2015 when Senator Umeh visited Onejeme in Awka and initiated a scholarship selection process under the Victor Umeh Education Foundation. A ballot system was adopted to select beneficiaries from kindreds and non indigenes. She was not selected.
At the time, her admission into the Federal Polytechnic, Oko was under threat as her parents were already struggling to fund the education of three other children in different universities. Overwhelmed by the reality before her, she broke down in tears.
Senator Umeh noticed her distress, asked what had happened and listened as she explained her situation. Moved by her circumstances, he offered to sponsor her education and assured her that she would not be abandoned halfway. He honoured that assurance by funding her studies through the Polytechnic. When her academic performance proved strong, he extended the support to the University of Nigeria, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.
Following her graduation, the Senator encouraged her to proceed directly to a master’s degree. However, delays surrounding the release of the NYSC call up list at the time led her to undertake national service first. Her visit, clad in full NYSC uniform, carried its own symbolism. In a brief but touching gesture, she conducted a parade of honour in appreciation of her benefactor, drawing visible emotion from those present.
The visit spoke beyond a personal story. It reflected the impact of sustained commitment to education as a tool for social change. Over 300 beneficiaries of the Victor Umeh Education Foundation have completed various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, while more than 324 students are currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria under the scheme.
Senator Victor Umeh, a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and a serving Senator of the Federal Republic, has over the years maintained a scholarship programme that continues to quietly transform lives across Anambra State and beyond, turning moments of despair into lasting achievement.
