The recent circulation of doctored images purporting to show former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, kneeling before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Vatican has sparked widespread controversy. However, Obi’s media office has swiftly debunked the claims, labeling the images as “clearly photoshopped” and not reflective of the actual proceedings.
According to a statement issued by Obi’s media adviser, Valentine Obienyem, no credible media platform reported such an incident, and it’s unlikely that such a significant event would go unreported by major newspapers. The media office also dismissed an image suggesting a handshake between Obi and Pope Leo XIV, citing protocol restrictions.
The selective focus on Obi’s presence at the event has raised questions, with Obienyem noting that several other Nigerian attendees were present, yet Obi has become the sole focus of online attention. “It is deeply regrettable that a spiritually significant occasion… is being misrepresented and reduced to a tool of political mischief,” the statement read.
Obienyem underscored the core of the event, which was the Pope’s powerful message calling for justice, peace, care for the poor, and ethical leadership. “These are timeless values that transcend partisan interest and speak to the conscience of humanity,” he said, urging Nigerians to internalize the Pope’s message and reflect it in their actions.
As the controversy continues to unfold, Nigerians are advised to be cautious of misinformation and to verify information before sharing. The incident highlights the need for critical thinking and media literacy in today’s digital age.
