The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violent attacks and killings in Benue and Plateau States, Nigeria.
According to Dr. Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, in a press release signed by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages Department, the Commission condemned the incidents, which have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of property.
Dr. Ojukwu emphasized that the right to life is a fundamental human right, enshrined in various international and national instruments. He expressed worry that the attacks, rooted in herders/farmers clashes, are degenerating into ethnic, religious, or communal tensions, which could exacerbate the situation and lead to further human rights violations.
The NHRC is particularly concerned about the impact of the insecurity on the farming season, as Benue is a major food-producing state. The Commission warned that the ongoing insecurity could lead to famine and food insecurity in the near future, putting at risk the billions borrowed to support local agriculture.
Dr. Ojukwu called on the government at all levels to take immediate and concrete steps to address the security situation, including deploying adequate security personnel, conducting thorough investigations, and prosecuting perpetrators of violence. He also urged security agencies to adhere to international human rights standards and principles in their response.
The Commission assured that it will continue to monitor the situation and engage with relevant authorities to ensure that human rights are protected and promoted. Dr. Ojukwu also urged all relevant stakeholders, including community leaders, political office holders, civil society organizations, and the media, to work together to promote peace, tolerance, and understanding.
