The maiden edition of the Senate President National Open Lawn Tennis Championship, tagged “His Excellency Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio National Open Tennis Championship 2025,” will hold from October 4th to 11th October this year. The tournament is being organized by the Organization of Africa Events Management Limited in collaboration with the Nigeria Tennis Federation.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Africa Events Management Limited, Rt. Hon. Prince Kolawole Mathew, disclosed this after securing approval from the Senate Committee on Sports Development and endorsement from the National Assembly leadership. According to Mathew, the tournament targets to promote tennis development in Nigeria, engage Nigerian youth through competitive sports, and recognize Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio’s effective leadership.
The championship will take place in Abuja and Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Mathew commended Akpabio for welcoming the initiative and assured of his support. Akpabio, in his remarks, appealed to the Nigerian private sector to assist in funding sports, stating that the sector can drive sports development in the country.
The Senate President emphasized that the tournament is an opportunity to attract private sector investment, encourage students to take interest in tennis, and ultimately make Nigeria proud. The Senate Committee on Sports Development Chairman, Senator Abdul Ningi, facilitated the meeting that led to the approval of the tournament.
