Chief Dr George Moghalu, is one of the visible strong gubernatorial aspirants in Anambra State under the Labour Party- seeking to replace the incumbent governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, he has detailed his plans for transforming the state. In an interactive session with members of The League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA), on Tuesday, Moghalu discussed his 12-point agenda, focusing on security, infrastructure, agriculture, and other key sectors.
Moghalu emphasized the need for good governance, accessibility, and transparency in leadership. He believes politicians must prioritize citizens’ welfare and work towards building trust between the government and the people. “My mission in politics is to change the narrative,” he said, “and the simple question is how. It is achievable by offering people good governance, being accessible, giving them access to you, relating directly with them, telling them the truth, and carrying them along.
“So I have always say that my mission in politics is to change that narrative and the simple question is how and I also reply that it is achievable and the only way you can do it is to offer people good governance, be accessible, give them access to you – relate directly with them, tell them the truth, carry them along so that whenever you encounter challenges along the way in the course of carrying out your programs, they will be there for you, to help you, guide you and pray for you, so that in the end all of us, them inclusive will navigate through all of the challenges and emerge stronger and better. There is an Igbo proverb that I take delight in quoting which says, “if you do away with your native doctor that prepares charm for you for protection, have all your enemies finished”?
On security, Moghalu highlighted the alarming rate of insecurity in Anambra State, citing kidnappings, killings, and cult wars. He criticized the current government’s handling of security, describing their efforts as unimpressive. “The news you hear every day from Anambra State is either someone has been kidnapped, someone has been killed, or there is cult war, even in the state capital Awka,” he noted. Moghalu proposed a multi-faceted approach to address insecurity, including the use of technology, community policing, and collaboration with traditional institutions.
“If you want to deal with the issue of insecurity, the simple question I ask is why have we not brought in technology in addressing the issue of insecurity in Anambra State?” he queried. “There is no one command and control center in our state, and the resources are available. There is no CCTV camera located at any place except the few that late Senator Ifeanyi Uba provided at Nnewi.” He further emphasized the need for a command and control system center across the state, CCTVs at strategic locations, and investment in intelligence gathering.
Moghalu also highlighted the potential of community vigilantes in enhancing security. “Today in Anambra State, we are 179 communities, before we used to be 177 and every community has vigilantes,” he stated. “If I have the opportunity of being at the helm of affairs of the state, the first thing I will do is to document them, train them, equip them, and remunerate them very well.” He believes this approach will create a security force that works closely with traditional institutions and community administrative structures.
On infrastructure, Moghalu stressed the importance of investing in quality roads. “I believe that investment in infrastructure generates economic activities, but unfortunately, that is not what is going on in this government,” he said. He cited examples of well-built roads by previous administrations, mentioning specifically Peter Obi and Chris Ngige’s projects. “Look at the roads Peter Obi built, look at the roads Chris Ngige built in Idemili North and South and other places; they are still roads that are still being used today, meanwhile the ones the current administration built last year have collapsed,” he noted.
Moghalu ended by reiterating his commitment to offering alternatives and solutions. “If I criticize, I offer an alternative. If it is me, this is what I would have done,” he said, highlighting his approach to governance and security. Dr Moghalu targets to transform Anambra State and provide its citizens with the good governance they deserve with his 12-point agenda.
